Set down a quarter of a mile of its own private drive, The Old Granary is a charming, substantial house offering great peace and seclusion as well as some absolutely outstanding views of Loch Fleet, near Golspie (3.5 miles) in Sutherland.
What used to be the granary for the estate has been thoughtfully refurbished and now offers spacious accommodation with plenty of room to spread out into. There is a choice of places to relax with a contemporary sitting room with a wood-burning stove at its heart or an equally cosy snug that has great loch views and is warmed by an open fire.
The bright and airy kitchen has a huge cooker capable of coping with meal prep for bigger parties and there is enough seating for everyone to enjoy meals together in the large, formal dining room.
All of the attractive bedrooms lie off a long corridor upstairs that runs the full length of the house with a modern shower room at each end. The three twin bedrooms are all comfortable and beautifully presented throughout.
There are also two pretty double bedrooms, one of which has a king-size bed and an en suite bathroom. The other double has a door out to external steps that provide quick access to the garden so the loch can be admired from bed as the lapping of the water induces sleep.
Plenty of parking is provided behind the house and from the front patio the garden leads right down to the pebbly shoreline (care to be taken with little ones). Scenic walks can be taken in the woodland behind the house and the picnic tables down by the shoreline are perfect for al fresco dining amidst stunning scenery.

Loch Fleet is a sea loch that is home to a variety of wildlife including harbour seals, otters and lots of different wading birds that feed along the shoreline. Over on the other side of the loch is the Loch Fleet National Nature Reserve where there are even more species to spot.
Supplies can be stocked up on in Golspie (3.5 miles) where there are various eateries to try if a break from cooking beckons. Race meetings are held at the nearby go karting track in the summer which are always interesting to watch as a spectator.
Just outside Golspie is Dunrobin Castle that is certainly one of the ‘must see’ sights in the area. Visitors can tour the many internal rooms and marvel at the fabulous historic artefacts, artwork and costumes on display. Falconry displays are held in the beautiful grounds of the castle that are also well worth a walk around.
The North Coast 500 runs through Golspie so it is a good opportunity to drive some of this increasingly popular route that stretches all the way around the whole coastline of the Highlands. Some brave souls even attempt parts of it by bike!
Whisky lovers will want to take a trip down to Tain half an hour’s drive away to see the home of the famous whisky at the Glenmorangie Distillery. Tours are available for an insight into the distillation process and a look at the huge stills that are used, followed by a stop off in the tasting room for a wee dram.

Nestled in a beautifully serene location, The Old Granary affords the perfect, tranquil escape in which to unwind and reconnect with nature, whether from the garden, on the shore or in the woodlands, and then return to the warmth and homely comfort of this charming building. We simply could not have been happier and are most grateful to the hosts for decorating and provisioning it so thoughtfully for our surprise family celebration, and for accommodating us for an unexpected extra night. In sum, The Old Granary and its location are simply stunning, and thoroughly recommended for anyone seeking a peaceful, rejuvenating retreat. We certainly hope to return.

This was our families second stay at The Granary and I can’t wait to come back. It’s a huge cosy and welcoming property with history and quirkiness but always clean and to a good standard. The location is second to none with loch views out front and forest behind and sandy beaches a 5 min stroll away. it is perfect! Golspie and nearby Brora are lovely towns with great facilities and lots to explore in the surrounding area. Don’t hesitate to book if it’s free!

Delightful house in the most amazing location - we enjoyed walks in the woodland leading to paddles in the sea on beautiful beaches. Watching the seals come & go & birdwatching + Milky way at night + fabulous complete rainbow spanning the estuary. Crabbing off Littleferry quay, paddle boarding on the loch (keeping well away from the seals!) Visited Dornoch & Dunrobin Castle & surrounding ares. Younger ones climbed up the Monument. Found everything we could need in Golspie - excellent butcher, well stocked Co-op, yummy ice cream parlour & coffee shop + even locally made fabulous chocolates + excellent meal at the Golspie Inn. What's not to like??

The Old Granary provided us with one of the best holidays we have had over the years. It was warm, comfortable and lots of space for the three generations of family staying together. It is an old property so has its quirks and character but everything was provided for large groups and it was immaculately clean on arrival. The area surrounding was wonderful for our kids and dog especially the shore line of Loch Fleet and the beautiful forest of the nature reserve. Shops and services are only a 10 min drive away in Golspie inc car chargers for electric vehicles, and we ate like kings each night. I would highly recommend this property and hope to return. It would be good if the owners could upgrade the internet connection as it was often poor and meant at times some tv options would not be watchable (being DVD’s). This is no way spoiled our experience overall but I think these days it’s not unreasonable to expect more than just the basic package of service.
